What you will be doing

This apprenticeship role offers a unique opportunity to learn and work in a global healthcare consultancy company alongside a team of statisticians, psychometricians and programmers. In this full time role you will be working in project teams supporting statistical and psychometric analyses, and alongside you will be studying for a level 7 (masters) in Medical Statistics . 20% of your time will be dedicated towards study (3-year study period), with tuition fees fully paid for and a full-time salary.

Our statistical analyses involve the analysis of clinical trial data, with a focus on patient-centered outcomes such as quality of life, including how a patient is functioning, feeling or experiencing symptoms. Alongside more clinical measurements, such as blood pressure or survival time, these outcomes are used to inform healthcare decisions between different treatments. Our psychometric analyses are based around how we collect this data, including the creation of the outcome measures to be used in clinical trials and assessment of how reliable and valid they are within different patient populations.

What we are looking for:

A highly numerate individual with a mathematics or mathematics with statistics bachelor’s degree (2:2 minimum) with an interest in applying statistics in the field of healthcare and medicine

Highly organised, with a rational approach to problem solving

A passion to learn

Able to work in a team

Good time management to balance work and study

Eligible for a UK Government-approved level 7 (Masters) in Medical Statistics

This role is based in our Bollington office, near Macclesfield

Starting Salary £24,000

25 day’s annual leave increasing to 28 days after 12 months service

Day-to-day

 

  • Creation of statistical analysis plans
  • Writing of sections of scientific reports and PowerPoint results presentations, under supervision
  • Attending meetings with pharmaceutical company clients
  • Attending internal project team meetings
  • Creation of table and figure shells
  • Learning SAS and R programming to support creation of tables and figures
  • Conduct and interpretation of analyses, under supervision

MSc Medical Statistics – Further Information  

While in this role you will also be working towards your MSc Medical Statistics qualification which focuses on developing theoretical statistical knowledge and expertise, based around real-life medical/health research and data sets.

This apprenticeship is run by academics who work in the health sector as well as in higher education. It’s designed for those with a BSc degree in a quantitative subject and who wish to study towards an MSc.

The programme is delivered by University of Strathclyde. Degree Apprentices will have access to an award-winning digital platform and will access course materials via a Virtual Learning Environment as well as attend online live sessions to complement the learnings.

 

Day-to-day

 

  • In-depth knowledge of modern statistical methods used to analyse and visualise real-life health-related data-sets, and how to apply these methods
  • Skills in using statistical software packages used in government, industry, and commerce
  • The ability to interpret the output from statistical tests and data analyses, and communicate findings to a variety of audiences including health professionals, scientists, government officials, managers, and stakeholders who may have an interest in the research problem
  • Problem-solving and high numeracy skills are widely sought after in the commercial sector
  • Practical experience in statistical consultancy and how to interact with professionals who require statistical analyses of their data
  • The ability to interpret the output from statistical tests and data analyses, and communicate findings to a variety of audiences
